Why Are French Bulldogs So Expensive?

You know that saying “you get what you pay for”? That certainly holds true when looking for a French bulldog puppy; a high-quality, reputable breeder will conduct many tests to ensure your puppy is free of any preventable genetic health problems.

Breeding French Bulldogs is a full-time job; they require constant attention and care. The high price is due to all the expenses needed for breeding a French bulldog, I've listed a few below:

French Bulldogs are not easy to breed. They are a man made breed.  French Bulldogs can not breed naturally, French bulldog males have a hard time reaching the critical part of the female, which is positioned rather high on the body. They can easily become overheated or injured while trying. Their narrow hips make it difficult to successfully breed as well. This is why artificial insemination is done and this can become costly and time consuming. The females don’t have much in the way of hips or “handles” for the males to grip when attempting to mate. Those slender hips also make natural birth impossible. The large heads and broad shoulders of the puppies would get stuck, resulting in the loss of the litter and injury or death of the mother, because of those slender hips, a c-section is always necessary. They are, of course, not free, and the bill can skyrocket if a trip to an emergency vet for an unscheduled c-section occurs.

Progesterone tests are required to determine when exactly the female is ovulating. Blood tests are also needed to ensure that the future mother is healthy and strong enough to carry a litter.

When the time is right, the female is then artificially inseminated. The cost can vary based on the sire’s pedigree, but it is not cheap. Pregnancy tests are next, followed by prenatal care, which includes check-ups, supplements, and possibly a special diet. The costs quickly add up.

Once you bring the Frenchie babies’ home it's team no sleep for the next 3 weeks. We do 24/7 care for mom and babies. It's like having a new born baby all over again; you’re up every 2-3 hours latching the puppies to nurse. at 3 days old we start ENS training, after the 3 week mark we start adding puppy mush along with nursing and our ENS Training goes to the next level, litter box training starts at 4 weeks old, and we increase our ENS training day by day. We are constantly monitoring and caring for these sweet babies from the moment they are born until they are in your arms .

Breeding can cost thousands of dollars per litter. And often, the litters are quite small. Most litters average 3-5 puppies each.

Understanding why French Bulldogs are expensive and the extent of care that goes along with each litter should give you a new appreciation for the breeders and all of the time, effort, and money that goes into producing these puppies. Yes, they can be expensive, but the joy of owning one of these dogs is absolutely priceless!

Are French Bulldogs Easy To Keep Groomed?

French Bulldogs don’t require a lot of grooming. Occasional brushing keeps the coat shiny, and regular nail trimming is a must since many dogs don’t usually wear their nails down by running. Regular cleaning of the ears and of the deep facial folds will prevent these sensitive areas from becoming irritated.

Do French Bulldogs Have A Lot of Health Issues?

Reputable breeders take great care when breeding French Bulldogs. Their health depends on where you purchase your puppy from. Reputable breeders test both parents for genetic health issues to ensure the pups are healthy, research the family trees of both sides to study the health of the entire line and do DNA testing to make sure the parents are compatible and only produce the healthiest litter possible. Reputable breeders go the extra mile to improve the breed and get rid of health problems to ensure the puppies are happy and healthy.

Is Swimming A Good Sport For French Bulldogs?

Is swimming a good sport for French Bulldogs? No! Swimming can be a very difficult sport for Frenchie’s to practice due to the measured breathing that needs to be done, plus their compact size and heavy body, swimming can be taxing for them and most will sink like a rock if left alone. French Bulldogs must never be left unattended around water, as they are poor swimmers and can easily drown due to their front-heavy structure.

Are French Bulldogs Outside Dogs?

No! French bulldogs do best in moderate temperatures and should be carefully supervised in both high and low temperature ranges. Panting or shivering are both indications of excessive exposure. In warm and/climates or humid environments, (over approximately 70º F), air conditioning in the house and car are a must!

What Toys/Chews Are Best For French Bulldogs?

Indestructible dog toys are best, as those powerful bulldog jaws can destroy less durable ones; and rawhide type chews should not be used because when they soften they can become lodged in a Frenchie's throat.

Do Frenchie's Bark A Lot?

No. Frenchie’s tend to bark only when something is really worth it! And that’s what makes Frenchie’s good for apartment living, as they will not annoy your neighbors.

There's an adorable French Bulldog puppy at the pet shop. The store manager assures me they only buy from responsible breeders. Could this be true?

No. There are no responsible French Bulldog breeders who would ever place one of their French Bulldog puppies in a pet shop for resale.

I love French Bulldogs! They are worth the money, especially when you get them from a responsible breeder. If you're looking for a rare breed of dog to own, then a French Bulldog might be your best bet! Not only are they gorgeous, they also come with a lot of personality. French Bulldogs are super affectionate, fun to be around, and love to play. Plus, they're really good with kids! I could go on and on about how great they are, but there's also a lot of effort and dedication that goes into breeding them.  We'd Love the opportunity to help you add one to your family if you think this is the right breed for you!
